To make red velvet cake, gather German chocolate cake mix and 1 cup of buttermilk or water. You also need 1/2 cup of vegetable oil, 3 eggs, 1 ounce of red food coloring and 2 tablespoons of unsweetened baking cocoa.
Heat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit; if your pan is dark or nonstick, heat the oven to 325 degrees Fahrenheit instead. Grease the bottom and sides of the cake pan and lightly flour the pan. Use an electric mixer on low speed to mix the cake ingredients for 30 seconds.
Move the mixer speed to medium for two minutes and scrape the bowl a few times. Cascade the mixture into the pan. Follow the baking instructions on the box of German chocolate cake mix. Let the cake cool for 10 minutes and then remove the cake from the pan.
Gather the ingredients for the cake frosting: 2 ounces of softened cream cheese, 2 teaspoons of milk, 1 1/2 cups of whipping cream and 1/2 cup of powdered sugar. Mix the cream cheese and milk. Add the whipping cream and sugar on high speed with the electric mixer until fluffy peaks form. Frost the cake and store it in the refrigerator.
