How Do You Make a Quick and Easy Sour Cream Dip?

Sour cream dip is made from a mixture of sauteed onions and garlic, sour cream, mayonnaise and seasoning. Herbs such as chives can add some extra flavor to the dish.

This quick and easy recipe for sour cream dip was originally featured in Cooking Light magazine and is hosted on the My Recipes website. The original recipe uses reduced-fat sour cream and mayonnaise; however, full-fat ingredients work just as well.

  • 1 teaspoon canola oil
  • 1 yellow onion
  • 1 tablespoon garlic, minced
  • 1/8 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise
  • 2 tablespoons chives, minced
  • 1/4 teaspoon white pepper
  • 1/8 teaspoon salt
  1. Prepare the vegetables
  2. Peel and finely chop the onion. Mince the garlic and the chives and set the chives aside.

  3. Sautee the onion and garlic
  4. In a small skillet, heat up some oil over medium-high heat. Sautee the onion and garlic for 4 minutes and season the mixture with 1/8 teaspoon salt. Turn down the heat and cook for an additional 6 minutes. Let the mixture cool slightly before proceeding.

  5. Make the sour cream mixture
  6. Mix the sour cream, mayonnaise, chives and seasoning together.

  7. Stir in the onions
  8. Stir the onion mixture into the sour cream mixture. Serve chilled with chips, bread or veggies.
