Make perfect sticky rice by using the correct type of rice either on the stove, steamed or in a rice cooker. Use long-grain sticky rice, sweet rice or glutinous rice to make sticky rice. These types of rice are available in the rice aisle of a neighborhood market, the ethnic food section, an Asian or international grocery store or online.
To make sticky rice on the stove, combine 2 cups of long-grain sticky rice with 3 1/2 cups of water. Soak the rice for anywhere between 1/2 hour to 4 hours. Add 1/2 teaspoon of salt to the rice and stir together. Put the pot over high heat, and bring the rice mixture to a boil. Turn the heat to medium, and cover the pot with a slightly ajar lid. Cook for 10 minutes. Do not stir the rice while cooking. Check that all the water has been absorbed, then remove the pot from the heat, and allow it to stand for 10 minutes before serving.
To make sticky rice in a rice cooker, combine 2 cups of long-grain sticky rice with 2 1/2 cups of water in the rice cooker. Soak the rice between 1/2 hour to 4 hours, then add 1/2 teaspoon of salt. Start the rice cooker, and allow it to automatically shut off or shut it off after 15 to 20 minutes. Let the rice stand 5 minutes before serving.
