To cook pulled pork well, a slow cooker is recommended. The ingredients for this recipe include 2 medium yellow onions, 4 garlic cloves, 1 cup of chicken broth, 1 tablespoon of packed dark brown sugar, and 5 pounds of boneless pork or bone-in pork shoulder.
Other required ingredients are 2 cups of barbecue sauce, 1 tablespoon chili powder, 1 tablespoon salt, 1/2 teaspoon of ground cumin and 1/4 teaspoon of ground cinnamon. First, lay the sliced garlic and onions at the bottom of the slow cooker with the chicken broth. Combine the chili powder, sugar, salt, cinnamon and cumin in a bowl. Dry off the pork, and rub the spice mixture over the meat. Lay the meat on top of the onions, broth and garlic, and let it stew on high for about six to eight hours. If stewing on low, this may take up to 10 hours. Stop stewing when the pork is fork tender.
Remove the pork from the slow cooker, and strain the remaining liquid off. Remaining solids should be returned to the slow cooker. Remove all bones from the pork, use a fork to shred the pork into bite-sized pieces, and then return it to the slow cooker. Add the barbecue sauce to the meat and remaining solids, and combine. If the pork still seems dry, add some of the strained liquid back to the slow cooker in small amounts.
