To make LandOLakes.com's orange cream layer cake, preheat an oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans. In a bowl, combine 1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour, 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder, 1/4 teaspoon baking soda and 1/4 teaspoon salt. In a separate bowl, combine 1 1/2 cups sugar, 3/4 cups softened butter and 1 tablespoon orange zest. Beat the butter until creamy, then slowly add 3 eggs. Alternate between adding flour mixture and 3/4 cup of buttermilk, beating constantly, until just combined.
Divide the batter between the two pans and bake for 27 to 32 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean. Let cool for 10 minutes before removing the cakes from the pans. In a bowl, combine 1/3 cup powdered sugar, 1/4 cup heavy cream, 1 8-ounce package of cream cheese, 2 tablespoons orange juice and 1 tablespoon orange zest.
Once the cake has cooled, place the bottom layer on a serving plate and top with the cream cheese mixture, reserving 1/2 cup of the filling. Top with the other cake layer, cover, and refrigerate. While the cake chills, combine 1 cup heavy cream with 2 tablespoons powdered sugar and 1 teaspoon grated orange zest. Add remaining filling, then beat at high speed until stiff peaks form. Frost the cake, then serve immediately or refrigerate for up to six hours.Learn more about Desserts
