Some of the key ingredients required in preparing a basic picadillo dish include ground beef, lime juice, honey and numerous spices such as cloves, garlic and pepper among others. Mexican picadillo is an easy-to-cook traditional dish that is popular in most parts of the Latin America. Other common ingredients include onions, tomatoes, olive oil and beef broth. The picadillo dish takes about 30 minutes to cook.
Peel the onion and chop it into small pieces, preferably not more than 1/4-inch thick. Heat the saucepan with olive oil over medium heat. Add ground beef and the onion pieces and allow the mixture to cook for about 5 to 8 minutes.
Prepare the tomatoes, garlic, and green pepper, and then add them to the cooking meat mixture and stir thoroughly. Let the resulting mixture cook until the meat has fully browned and the onion pieces have turned translucent.
At this point, add the beef broth, honey, cloves and other remaining ingredients. Let the mixture boil while remaining uncovered for about 10 to 15 minutes. This allows the excess liquids to evaporate. The resulting mix should form a thick sauce.
Remove the pan from the heat and allow the sauce to cool slightly. You can sprinkle some lime juice over the picadillo for added flavor. Picadillo can be served with white rice or tortillas for a delicious main meal.
