Kombucha tea can be made with just a few ingredients and supplies. You need a glass jar, a plastic or wood stirring spoon, a breathable cover for the jar, and a rubber band.
Gather the ingredients
Gather one kombucha scoby (the starter culture), tea (many varieties are available including black, oolong and green), sugar, distilled white vinegar and filtered water.
Mix hot water and sugar in the jar. Make sure the water is hot enough to melt and dissolve the sugar; don't use boiling water. Mix the sugar into the water until it has completely dissolved.
Steep the tea
Place the tea bags into the jar and allow the tea to steep. The longer you leave the tea in the jar the stronger the tea will be. Leave the tea in the jar at least until the mixture has cooled to room temperature.
Add kombucha scoby
Place the kombucha scoby and the vinegar in the jar of cooled tea. If you have previously made kombucha tea, you can use this in place of the vinegar.
Cover the jar
Place your cover over the jar and secure with a rubber band. You can use a paper towel or a coffee filter as a cover. Don't use an airtight cover because the fermenting process requires the jar to breathe.
Allow fermenting to occur
Place your jar in an area where it will not be disturbed. Moving the jar will disrupt the fermenting process. The fermenting process can take from five to seven days.
