Make kolache dough using milk, flour, eggs, yeast and a few other common baking ingredients. Allow the dough to rise before baking it in a hot oven.
Stir 1/3 cup of warm milk and 1 teaspoon of sugar in a small bowl. Add one package of dry yeast to the bowl and stir until yeast completely dissolves. Allow the mixture to stand and become bubbly. Meanwhile, place 3 1/2 cups of flour in a large bowl. Use your fist or a cup to make a large depression in the center of the flour. Pour 2/3 cup of warm milk, one egg, 1/3 cup of sugar, 1/3 cup of melted butter, 1 teaspoon of salt and the yeast mixture into the depression.
Mix and knead the dough until it is smooth. Grease the dough and set it aside to rise. Wrap the dough in plastic and save it for later if you aren't baking it right away.
To bake, separate the dough into seven portions. At this point, you can place any filling ingredients on top of the dough portions. Roll the pieces of dough up, using your fingers to pinch the ends closed. Place two kolaches on a cookie sheet and allow them to rise for 10 minutes before brushing them lightly with melted butter. Bake in an oven at 350 F for 20 to 25 minutes.
