To make Kentucky bourbon pie, combine 1/2 cup of flour and 1 cup of sugar in a large bowl. Add two beaten eggs and 1/2 cup of melted butter to the bowl, and mix. Next, stir in 2 tablespoons of Kentucky bourbon, 1 cup of chopped walnuts, 1 1/4 cups of semi-sweet chocolate chips, 1 teaspoon vanilla extract and a pinch of salt. Pour the mixture into an unbaked pie crust, and bake for 40-45 minutes at 350 degrees Fahrenheit.
Kentucky bourbon pie should cool before it is sliced and served.
The crust for a Kentucky bourbon pie can be a ready-made pie crust or made from scratch. To make a pie crust, mix 1 cup of all purpose flour with 1/2 teaspoon of salt in a medium bowl. Cut in 1/3 cup of vegetable shortening with a pastry blender or two knives in a crisscross motion. Sprinkle with 2 tablespoons of cold water, and blend until the mixture sticks together. Form the dough into a ball. Roll the dough out to 1/8 inch thickness, and place in a pie plate, crimping the sides as desired.
Kentucky bourbon pie is traditionally served at the Kentucky Derby, which is a horse race held annually on the first Sunday in May in Louisville, Kentucky.
