Most hot toddy recipes call for spices, honey, lemon juice or fresh lemon, and whiskey mixed with hot water or tea. Spices may include cloves, ginger, nutmeg and cinnamon, among others.
One recipe for a hot toddy calls for boiling 8 ounces of water, stirring in 1/4 teaspoon of ground ginger, 3 whole cloves and a cinnamon stick, and adding 2 orange pekoe or green tea bags in a large mug. Steep the tea for five minutes, and then remove the tea bags. Microwave the tea for one minute, and then stir in 2 tablespoons of honey, 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice or apple cider vinegar, and 1 to 2 ounces of whiskey.
Another hot toddy recipe calls for placing 2 ounces of whiskey in a large microwave-safe mug, adding 1 tablespoon of honey, and then pouring in 4 ounces of hot tap water. Add 1 teaspoon lemon juice, and stir. Microwave the mixture for one minute, and then garnish with a fresh lemon slice.
An additional recipe calls for boiling a cup of water, and mixing 1 ounce of whiskey, rum, scotch or bourbon with 1 tablespoon of honey. Place 1 lemon slice in the bottom of a mug, and then add desired spices, such as cloves, a cinnamon stick or freshly grated nutmeg. Pour the hot water over the mixture, and stir to mix the drink well before serving.
