To make homemade ziti pasta, begin by first boiling a large pot of water. Add 1 tablespoon of salt and the dried ziti pasta to the boiling water, and allow it cook for eight minutes. While the pasta is cooking, heat a large pan over medium heat.
Add 2 tablespoons of olive oil to the heated pan. Once the oil is hot, add 1 pound of ground beef or Italian sausage. Cook the meat until it is brown, and then add 1 chopped onion. Cook the meat and onion together until the onion looks clear. Pour 3 1/2 cups of tomato sauce into the pan, and allow the sauce to cook with the meat and onion for about 15 minutes.
Drain the ziti pasta, and transfer it to a large baking dish. Pour a thin layer of sauce onto the top of the pasta, and add Parmesan cheese and grated mozzarella. Pour the rest of the sauce over the pasta, and add another layer of cheese. Place the baking dish in the oven, and lower the heat to 350 degrees. Let the pasta cook for 30 to 40 minutes, until the cheese has melted. Remove the pasta from the oven, and sprinkle any remaining cheese on top. Serve the pasta immediately.
