To make homemade puppy chow, melt chocolate, and add peanut butter and powdered sugar to a bowl of rice cereal. Once complete, puppy chow can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature.
Start making puppy chow by melting the chocolate. Pour 1 cup of semi-sweet chocolate chips into a saucepan, and leave the burner on low heat. Chocolate can only be melted at low heat, otherwise it might burn. Do not add anything to the chocolate while it is melting, including oil, butter and water. If it starts to clump, throw it out, and start again with another cup of chocolate. Even the smallest amount of water in the chocolate can cause it to seize up. Stir the chocolate often, and watch it closely, following with the next steps immediately when it is fully melted.
As soon as the chocolate has melted, add 1/2 cup peanut butter, and mix well. Remove the pot from the heat, and add 9 cups crispy rice cereal squares, mixing well, being sure all cereal is coated. Once all cereal is coated in the mixture, add 1 1/2 cups powdered sugar to a plastic bag, add the cereal mixture and shake until it is coated.
