To make date and nut bars, place the dates in a bowl, and add boiling water. In another bowl, cream shortening with sugar, and beat in the eggs. Add the dates along with any water to the sugar mixture, and stir in flour, baking soda and chopped walnuts. Transfer the mixture to a baking pan, and bake in a preheated oven for about 45 minutes.
Use 2 cups pitted and chopped dates, 1/2 cup chopped walnuts, 1 cup white sugar, 1/2 cup shortening, 2 eggs and 1 cup all-purpose flour to make the date and nut bars. Additional ingredients include 1/4 teaspoon baking soda and 1/8 teaspoon each of cinnamon and nutmeg.
Preheat an oven to 325 degrees Fahrenheit, and grease a 10-by-10-inch baking pan. After pouring boiling water on the dates, allow the dates to cool.
Cream together the shortening and the sugar. Beat the eggs one at a time into the creamed mixture. Sift the flour with the baking soda, cinnamon and nutmeg, and stir the dry ingredients into the creamed mixture.
Evenly spread the batter in the prepared baking pan. After baking, allow the bars to cool, and then cut into individual pieces. Using 1/4 cup confectioners' sugar, roll each bar in the sugar.
