Make cube steak in a slow cooker by first browning the meat and transferring it to the cooker with onion and water. Add prepared gravy mix before serving. The recipe transforms an inexpensive cut of meat into a tender meal.
Begin with 6 4-ounce cube steaks. Coat each steak in flour, and place it in a frying pan with hot oil. Once the piece browns on one side, turn it to brown the opposite side. Avoid overcrowding the pan.
After browning the steaks, transfer them to the slow cooker. Slice a medium onion into thin slices, separating the rings. Place the onion on top of the cube steaks in the slow cooker. Add 2 cups of water, and set the slow cooker to low. Cover the pot, and cook the steak for a minimum of eight hours.
One-half hour before serving the cube steak, mix a packet each of brown gravy, mushroom gravy and onion gravy in a bowl with 1 cup of water. Whisk until no lumps remain. Pour the mixture into the slow cooker, and replace the lid.
While the gravy thickens, prepare mashed potatoes or pasta. Serve the cube steaks with your chosen side, covering the side with the gravy. The recipe serves six.
