A classic key lime pie recipe consists of fresh lime juice, graham cracker crumbs, sweetened condensed milk, grated lime peel and a few other ingredients. This key lime pie recipe makes eight servings and takes one hour and 40 minutes to prepare.
To make the pie, preheat the oven to 325 degrees Fahrenheit. In a medium bowl, add 1 1/4 cup of graham cracker crumbs, 2 tablespoons of sugar and 5 tablespoons of melted butter, and stir until combined. To make the crust, press this mixture into a 9-inch pie pan. Put the pan in the oven, and bake for about 10 minutes until the crust starts to brown. Let the crust cool for about 15 minutes.
Next, in a large bowl, combine two 14-ounce cans of sweetened condensed milk, 2/3 cup of lime juice and 1/3 cup of sour cream, and whisk until combined well. Next, whisk in 2 teaspoons of grated lime peel. Pour this mixture onto the crust, and bake for seven to 10 minutes. Let the pie completely cool on a wire rack.
To make the topping, beat 1 cup of heavy whipping cream, 1/4 cup of powdered sugar and 1/2 teaspoon of vanilla extract. Spread this mixture on top of the pie, and let it cool in the refrigerator at least an hour before serving.
