Making cake icing with Crisco requires 1 teaspoon of salt, 2/3 cups of milk, 2/3 cups of Crisco All-Vegetable shortening, 1 tablespoon of vanilla extract and 7 1/2 cups of powdered sugar. Stir the salt and the milk together until the salt dissolves.
Combine the milk, Crisco shortening and vanilla extract in a mixing bowl, and mix it together using either an electric mixer or a stand-up mixer. Pour in the powdered sugar a little bit at a time as you beat the ingredients together. Once all of the sugar has been added to the mixture, scrape the bottom of bowl to make sure that there no leftover shortening remains stuck to the bottom. Next, continue to mix the ingredients on a high speed setting for one more minute. The icing should have a smooth, fluffy texture. If needed, add single tablespoons of powdered sugar to thicken the mixture or additional milk to thin it.
To make buttercream icing, add 1 teaspoon of butter flavoring and 1/2 teaspoon of almond extract to the previous recipe during the initial mixing stage. Then, as you add the powdered sugar to the mixture, include 1 tablespoon of meringue powder, and beat the ingredients until the icing becomes smooth.
