Cabbage rolls are simply cabbage leaves filled with a ground beef and rice mixture and topped with tomato sauce. After preparing the rolls, bake them in a 350 degree oven for approximately one hour.
To make the ground beef and rice mixture, mix one pound of ground beef with 3/4 cup cooked rice, 1/2 cup chopped onion, 1/4 cup milk, an egg, 1 teaspoon pepper and 1 1/2 teaspoons salt. Place equal portions into 12 cleaned cabbage leaves and roll them up. Make the tomato sauce by combining an 8-ounce can of tomato sauce with a 14.5-ounce can of diced tomatoes, 2 tablespoons of vinegar, 3 tablespoons of sugar, 1/2 cup of water and 2 tablespoons of cornstarch thinned and smoothed with 1/4 cup of water. Place the rolls in a baking dish, pour the tomato sauce over the rolls, cover the dish and put it into the oven. Although many cultures lay claim to the origin of the cabbage roll, it is known only that the dish has been in existence since ancient times. Depending on the region, cooks create different sauces to please local palates. Cabbage rolls are also a staple for certain holiday meals in some parts of the world.
