- 1 1/4 pounds ground beef
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 4 hamburger buns
- Burger toppings of choice
- Form the patties
- Grill the burgers
To make the patties, divide the beef into four equal amounts and form each piece into a ball. Flatten the balls into 3/4-inch slices. Make a well in the top center of each patty.
Coat the grill grate with oil and heat up the grill. Grill the burgers for 4 to 5 minutes on each side.
Many burger recipes, such as those published by BBC Good Food and Jamie Oliver, recommend adding one beaten egg to the burger meat. Seasoning such as herbs, spices and onion can also be added to the patty mixture.
Suggested burger toppings include tomatoes, lettuce, sliced pickles, sliced pickled beets, onion, ketchup, mustard, mayonnaise, horseradish, arugula and cheddar cheese.
