Cut in 1/3 cup softened butter or margarine until the mixture is crumbly, and sprinkle it over the apples. Bake at 375 degrees Fahrenheit for 30 minutes, and serve warm with cream or cool with ice cream.
An apple crisp variation is baked apples with crisp topping. Cut 2 cooking apples across the center, stem side up. Cut out the cores using a melon baller to create a round hole. Sprinkle lemon juice on cut portions of each apple and place 1 tablespoon of strawberry preserves into each hole. Mix together 2 tablespoons flour, 3 tablespoons brown sugar, 1/2 cup uncooked oats, 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon and 3 tablespoons cold butter. Press the mixture onto the top of each apple to cover the jam, and bake the apples in a dish filled with 1/4 inch water for 35 minutes at 350 degrees Fahrenheit.Learn more about Desserts
