A roasted turkey normally takes around 20 minutes per pound to cook in a 325 F oven. It is best to cook the stuffing separately if serving.
To cook the turkey set the oven to 325 F. Remove the giblets and neck from the cavity of the bird. Vegetables such as onions, celery, carrots, and garlic can be used to stuff the bird loosely. Brush olive oil on the outside of the turkey and then salt and pepper. Set it in the roasting pan and cover the breast with foil. Roast for 20 minutes a pound, and take the foil off the last 45 minutes of cooking. Check the temperature of the bird by sticking the thermometer in the middle of the thigh, not touching the bone. It is done when it reaches 165 F. Let it sit 15 minutes and then carve and serve.
