How Long Do You Cook Broccoli Rabe?

The length of time required to cook broccoli rabe depends on the cooking method. For example, steaming broccoli rabe only takes five minutes, while roasting the vegetable takes 10 minutes.

One common method for preparing broccoli rabe is to sauté the vegetable. In this case, blanch it first by submerging the vegetable in salted boiling water for one minute. Remove the broccoli rabe from the water and immediately plunge it into ice water. Sauté the vegetable in heated oil with flavorings such as garlic, red pepper and salt. Cook for approximately three minutes.

Another way to prepare this dish is to steam rather than blanch the broccoli rabe. In this case, place the vegetable in the steamer, and cover it. Let the vegetable cook until it's tender, which typically takes five minutes. In a saucepan prepare the dressing, and drizzle it over the steamed broccoli rabe.

To roast broccoli rabe, toss the vegetable with oil and flavorings. Spread everything onto a sheet pan. Be careful to leave space so the broccoli rabe can roast. Bake in a 425 degrees Fahrenheit oven for 10 minutes.

To grill broccoli rabe, again toss it with oil and seasonings. Place it on a hot grill rack, and cover. Cook the vegetable at medium heat for four to five minutes. Turn the pieces over, and grill for an additional three to four minutes.
