Nicknamed the "Disneyland of Dairy Stores" by the "New York Times," Stew Leonard's is a family-run supermarket. The store was originally founded in 1969 as a dairy store where children could watch milk being bottled while their mothers shopped in a farmer's market-like atmosphere. Since then, Stew Leonard's has expanded to selling meats, fish, produce, baked goods, cheese and wine.
The store is still family-owned and operated, with Stew Leonard, Jr., son of the founder, working as President and CEO. Jill Leonard is the Vice President of Culture and Communication, Beth Leonard founded the company's "Bethy's Bakery" and runs the gift shop, and Tom Leonard founded the Stew Leonard's store in Danbury, Connecticut.
