A few of the 7,500 apple varieties grown throughout the world are the popular Golden Delicious, Granny Smith, McIntosh and Winesap. Certain types of apples are available in different months of the year and are best used for particular purposes.
Golden Delicious apples are yellow or yellow-green in appearance and are available from September through June. They are generally considered all-purpose, though they tend to lose flavor when cooked.
Granny Smith apples have a freckled green skin and a tart flavor. Available throughout the year, these apples are ideal for eating cooked or uncooked.
McIntosh apples are bright red and are available from September through March. These crisp apples with a combination of tart and sweet flavor do not always hold up well to cooking.
Red, tart and juicy, Winesap apples are good for eating uncooked or cooked. These apples are found primarily from November through May.
