Some Italian stuffed bread recipes are super stuffed French bread pizza rustica and spicy Italian sausage and cheese bread. One recipe calls for French bread, and the other recipe calls for pizza dough made into a bread loaf.
Make the super stuffed French bread pizza rustica using a 2-foot-long loaf of French bread. Split the bread, hollow it out, and cut it in half to make four pieces. Heat 1 pound of sweet Italian sausage in a skillet over medium-high heat. Cook the sausage until it is brown and crumbled. Stir in 1 small, chopped red bell pepper, 1 chopped onion and 2 cloves of chopped garlic. Cook these for five minutes, then add 1 package of spinach. Put the ingredients in a bowl along with 1 1/2 cups of ricotta, 1/2 cup of Parmesan, 1/2 pound of sopressata and 1/2 stick of chopped pepperoni. Fill the bread shells with this filling, and cover the top with mozzarella and provolone. Bake the bread at 425 degrees on a cookie sheet for about 10 minutes, until the cheese melts and bubbles. Season the pieces with red pepper flakes and oregano to taste.
The spicy Italian sausage recipe uses a similar technique for the filling. Instead of premade French bread, roll pizza dough into a 10-by-14-inch rectangle, fill the dough with the filling, then roll the dough into a log shape. The bread takes about 40 minutes to cook.
