The Volcano Taco from Taco Bell featured a hard red corn tortilla shell filled with ground beef, lettuce and a special spicy sauce called lava sauce. The fast food company released the taco in the fall of 2008, and it was added to the company's menu as a regular offering in 2009. As of August 2014, the volcano taco is no longer listed on Taco Bell's online menu.
In its advertising, Taco Bell claimed that the Volcano Taco was the spiciest taco the company had ever sold. Most of the spiciness was reportedly found in the taco's special sauce. According to menu experts at #HackTheMenu, consumers could add extra kick to their Taco Bell menu items by requesting to add the lava sauce from the Volcano Taco to their orders. However, this addition may no longer be available as the Volcano Taco has been removed from the menu.
The other signature ingredient of the Volcano Taco was its red shell. This taco was the only item with a red shell to have ever been sold by the company. However, Taco Bell has sold other items with black or orange shells, and there are similar-looking red strips included in the best taste taco.
