Ingredients that go into a typical red velvet cake include flour, sugar, cocoa, red food coloring and vinegar. Other ingredients in homemade red velvet cake are baking soda, salt and eggs, as well as vegetable oil, buttermilk and vanilla.
To make red velvet cake, grease and flour three 9-inch round cake pans, and preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Sift together 2 1/2 cups of flour, 1 1/2 cups of sugar, 1 teaspoon of baking soda, 1 teaspoon of salt and 1 teaspoon of cocoa powder. In a separate bowl, whisk 1 1/2 cups of vegetable oil, 1 cup of buttermilk, 2 eggs, 2 tablespoons of red food coloring, and 1 teaspoon each of white distilled vinegar and vanilla extract. Make sure the buttermilk and the eggs are at room temperature.
Add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, and use an electric mixer to beat the ingredients until they are combined and form a smooth batter. Pour the batter evenly among the three cake pans. Bake for about 30 minutes or until each cake pulls away from the side of the pan, and a toothpick placed in the center of each cake comes out clean. When the cakes are done, carefully remove them from the pans, and place them on a cooling rack to cool completely.
