Full Answer

Initially known as Opal Fruits in the United Kingdom, Starburst was introduced to the American market in 1967. The four original flavors were lemon, strawberry, orange and lime.

Starburst Strawberry Fruit Chews were launched in 1984, Starburst Tropical Fruit Chews were launched in the 1988 and Starburst California Fruit Chews were launched in 1989. Starburst Jelly Beans and Starburst Candy Canes were both introduced in 1995. In 1998, the original Opal Fruits name was phased out of use in Britain and the candy's American name of "Starburst" became accepted as its worldwide brand name.

Manufactured by Wrigley's, a subsidiary of Mars, Inc., other popular varieties of Starburst candies include Starburst Squirts, which feature a juicier center than traditional Starburst candy, and Starburst Gummibursts, which feature Flavor Duos flavor combinations, such as strawberry watermelon, green apple strawberry, cherry fruit punch and lemon cherry. Starburst Flavor Morphs transition from an original fruit flavor to a second fruit flavor as they are chewed.
