The primary ingredients for most saltine candies are butter, white sugar or brown sugar, saltine crackers and semi-sweet chocolate chips. Some recipes include additional ingredients such as peanut butter, crushed candies, Nutella and sea salt.
To make a classic saltine toffee recipe, line a cookie sheet with foil, and spray it with nonstick cooking spray. Place about 45 saltine crackers in a single layer to completely fill the bottom of the cookie sheet.
In a medium saucepan, melt 2 sticks of butter over medium heat. Add 1 cup of packed light brown sugar, and whisk the mixture constantly, bringing it to a slow boil. Continue to whisk the caramel for a few minutes until it thickens.
Quickly pour the caramel over the crackers, and spread it to evenly coat them. Bake the crackers for eight minutes at 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Remove the pan from the oven, and sprinkle the toffee with 1 cup of semi-sweet chocolate chips and 1 cup of peanut butter chips.
Return the toffee to the oven, and bake it for two to three minutes until the chips are slightly melted. Take the cookie sheet out of the oven, and immediately spread the melted chips evenly over the toffee layer.
If desired, top the toffee with additional ingredients such as chocolate candy pieces, pecans, walnuts or crushed cookies.
Let the toffee cool, and refrigerate it to harden it completely.
