The ingredients necessary for a simple Swiss steak recipe vary but generally include steak or beef, tomatoes, onions, bell peppers and flour. More ingredients that you need are garlic, water, oil and salt.
To make Swiss steak, rub 1 1/2 tablespoons of flour, 1/2 teaspoon of ground mustard and 1/4 teaspoon of salt on 1 1/2 pounds of beef boneless round, tip or chuck steak cut into six pieces. Pound the meat pieces flat, turn them over, and sprinkle 1 1/2 tablespoons of flour, 1/2 teaspoon of ground mustard and 1/4 teaspoon of salt on the other sides. Cook the flattened meat over medium heat with 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil.
After browning the beef, stir in 1 can of undrained whole tomatoes and 2 minced garlic cloves, and bring the mixture to a boil. Reduce the heat, and simmer everything for 75 minutes before adding 1 cup of water, 1 sliced onion and 1 sliced bell pepper. Bring everything to a boil again, and reduce the temperature to a simmer for eight minutes before serving.
Another simple recipe adds paprika to the meat in lieu of ground mustard. After browning the meat in a skillet, place it along with 3 green and 3 red sliced bell peppers, 4 sliced onions and 4 cans of crushed tomatoes in a slow cooker. Cook everything on low for six to eight hours.
