A lemon drop martini contains vodka and lemon juice along with homemade simple syrup or superfine sugar. Flavored vodka, Cointreau and lemon drop candies are optional. Serve the mixed drink in a chilled martini glass, and garnish with a lemon slice or lemon twist.
If using simple syrup, bring 1 part water to a boil. Add 2 parts sugar, and continuously stir as the sugar dissolves. Take the pan off the heat, and make sure that the water does not boil too long or the syrup will become too thick in consistency upon cooling. Once the syrup cools, bottle and refrigerate.
To make the martini, take 1 1/2 ounces vodka. You can substitute a flavored vodka to make the drink sweeter or more sour. Add 3/4 ounce lemon juice and 1 teaspoon simple syrup or superfine sugar. For extra citrus flavor, use 1/4 ounce Cointreau and only 1/2 teaspoon simple syrup or sugar.
Place in a cocktail shaker over ice, and shake thoroughly. Rub sugar on the rims of chilled glasses, and place lemon drop candies at the bottom of the glasses for additional sweetness if desired. Pour out the martini, and cut a lemon into thin slices or a twist to ornament the glass.
