A basic sangria recipe would contain a specific type of wine, either red or white depending on the type of sangria, as well as brandy, which adds sweetness, sugar and orange juice, which contributes a more fruity flavor to the sangria. A basic sangria recipe will also contain club soda. Depending upon the type of sangria, ingredients will also include certain types of fruit cut up into the drink like apples, limes, lemons and oranges.
Sangria also contains ice, and is best prepared with superfine granulated sugar in order to ensure that the sugar completely dissolves. Other basic sangria recipes may contain tart apples instead of sweet ones or seltzer water instead of club soda.
The wine used in sangria does not need to be expensive and high quality. The additional ingredients in the sangria render the quality of the wine used as less important, and the fruit and ice make it possible to use less wine than would otherwise be necessary.
White wine sangria can also be made with sparkling white wine, like Champagne or prosecco. White wine is complemented nicely by pineapple in addition to the standard fruit options. A less simple sangria can be spiced up with additions like pomegranate seeds, mint, blueberry and ginger.
