A fruit is the part of a plant that develops from the flower and contains the seeds, while a vegetable can be any other part of a plant, such as the leaves, stems or roots. A flower bud may also be considered a vegetable.
Foods that are considered to be vegetables are often less sweet or more savory than those considered to be fruits. Avocados, tomatoes, cucumbers and olives, for instance, are technically examples of fruits, although they are savory. Several examples of vegetables, which can come from many parts of a plant, are lettuce, which comes from the leaves; celery, which comes from the stem; and carrots, which are roots.
Most vegetables are more savory than fruits. Vegetables and savory fruits are most often prepared as part of the main part of a meal, while sweeter fruits are most often seen in deserts. Most fruits contain more calories per serving than vegetables because of their sugar content. An exception would be starchy vegetables, such as potatoes and yams, which are higher in calories.
Both fruits and vegetables have similar health benefits. They can contain antioxidants and are often high in fiber. Both fruits and vegetables are recommended as part of a healthy diet.
