Sourdough French bread and basic homemade bread are two highly rated yeast bread recipes from Taste of Home. Both recipes call for active dry yeast, but the sourdough French bread recipe also requires sourdough starter.
To make sourdough French bread, mix 1/4 ounce of yeast with 1 3/4 cups of warm water. Add 1/4 cup of sourdough starter, 2 tablespoons of canola oil, 2 tablespoons of sugar, 2 teaspoons of salt and 3 cups of flour. Mix and add enough flour to make a soft ball. Knead, cover and let rise until doubled.
Punch the dough down, divide in half and roll each half into a rectangle. Roll each portion up and pinch ends to seal. Transfer to baking sheets, cover and let rise until doubled. Combine 1/2 cup of water and 1 1/2 teaspoons of cornstarch and cook until thickened. Brush some of the mixture over the loaves, bake them at 400 degrees Fahrenheit for 15 minutes, then brush with the remaining mixture and bake until lightly browned.
To make basic homemade bread, dissolve 1/4 ounce of yeast in 2 1/4 cups of warm water. Add 3 tablespoons of sugar, 1 tablespoon of salt, 2 tablespoons of canola oil and 3 cups of flour. Mix and add enough flour to form a soft dough. Knead, cover and let rise until doubled.
Punch the dough down, divide in half and shape each portion into a loaf. Place into loaf pans, cover and let rise until doubled. Bake at 375 degrees F until golden brown.
