Fruits to avoid while on a low-fructose diet include apples, dry figs, pears, dates and prunes, all of which have high levels of fructose. Other hard-to-tolerate, fructose-filled fruits are bananas, grapes, mangoes, kiwi and watermelon. Apple juice, orange juice, persimmon fruit and raisins should also be avoided.
Fruits that can be eaten in moderation while on a low-fructose diet include apricots, peaches, raspberries, cantaloupe and plums. Individuals can also eat some blackberries, strawberries, pineapple and honeydew melon. Oranges, cherries and blueberries might be tolerable for some people, but contain 3 to 4 grams of fructose, which puts them close to the forbidden list.
To avoid common fructose intolerance symptoms such as abdominal pain, gas, diarrhea and nausea, always eat a moderate amount of safe fruit along with regular meals, and never snack on fruit between meals. It is best to avoid eating foods made from fruit such as jams, jellies and chutneys.
