To make healthy homemade trail mix, first purchase the following ingredients: oats, wheat germ, nuts, sesame seeds, blanched or slivered almonds, raisins, shredded coconut, vegetable oil, vanilla, and honey. Any of these can be replaced with other ingredients based on preference. For example, raisins can be replaced with dried berries.
First, preheat an oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit. While the oven is heating, mix the ingredients together in a large bowl with the following proportions: 1 1/2 cups of oats, 1/2 cup of wheat germ, 1/2 cup of nuts, 1/4 cup of sesame seeds, 1/4 cup slivered or blanched almonds, 1/2 cup of raisins, and 1/2 cup of shredded coconut.
In a separate bowl, mix together 1/4 cup of vegetable oil, 1 tablespoon of pure vanilla, and 1/4 cup of honey. Pour this combination over the dry mixture, then spread it over an oiled baking sheet. Place the baking sheet in the oven for 20-30 minutes, stirring the mixture once to prevent large lumps from forming. If large lumps begin to form, then they have the tendency to burn before everything else is completely cooked. After baking, store the trail mix in an airtight container to keep it fresh and scrumptious.
