What Are the Health Benefits of Aloe Vera Juice?

Drinking aloe juice reportedly may improve health problems such as high cholesterol, diabetes, heartburn, constipation and inflammation. Many proponents of this natural remedy believe that it also supports detoxification, improves hair and skin, boosts immune function and increases muscle strength.

In a 2001 research study, scientists studied the effects of aloe juice on human cells. They concluded that the juice contains aloeride, a type of carbohydrate that may increase a key protein that supports immunological processes. In 2004, a study in the United Kingdom revealed that aloe juice alleviates some of the symptoms of ulcerative colitis, which is an inflammatory bowel disease. There is, however, very little scientific evidence to support using aloe juice to alleviate health problems. More research is needed to support the health benefits touted by many proponents of this natural remedy.

Additionally, aloe juice may pose significant safety concerns, particularly when consumed in large quantities or on a regular basis. For example, aloe juice contains aloin, aloe latex and aloe-emodin, which are naturally occurring substances known as anthraquinones. Anthraquinones have a powerful laxative effect and may have toxic effects on the body. Additional concerns include possible gastrointestinal problems and lowered blood-sugar levels. When buying aloe juice, look for aloe juice that doesn't contain these substances.
