Happy hour is a period of time during which bars, pubs and restaurants sell drinks at a reduced price, accompanied by appetizer specials or free snacks. Generally, happy hour runs from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.
Happy jour originally represented the first hour after an employee got off work for the day. Workers would stop off at a pub or bar near their workplaces to have a quick drink before heading home for the evening. Bars and pubs capitalized on this after-work crowd by offering drink. "Happy hour" is now used more loosely, and can apply to any drink specials used to draw in customers during otherwise slower times in business, such as 9 p.m.to 11 p.m.
