Green olives have a few health benefits with nutrients that include monounsaturated fat along with a good amount of fiber, calcium, magnesium, potassium, vitamin E and antioxidants. However, according to Dr. David L. Katz, they also contain a significant number of calories, so they can contribute to weight gain and high blood pressure if eaten in copious amounts.
The nutrients within green olives provide different health benefits to the body. For instance, vitamin E contains antioxidant properties that help the body fight free radicals. Calcium contributes to bone health and prevents osteoporosis. Green olives also contain copper, which functions in the body in many ways including regulating the metabolism as well as helping the body obtain energy; copper also contributes to various enzymatic reactions. Fiber has a number of functions including regulating digestive health through proper digestion and evacuating food from the digestive tract as well as lowering cholesterol levels in the blood. Green olives also have some degree of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids. However, Katz says that green olives also contain a high amount of sodium. This means that consuming one seven-ounce jar of green olives provides the body with more than an entire day's worth of sodium.
