Grapefruit has diuretic properties. In addition to assisting the body in getting rid of excess water weight, the fruit also aids in digestion and is used for antiseptic and tonic purposes.

Grapefruits are often included in weight loss diets for their ability to burn fat. One serving of grapefruit contains less than 100 calories. The fruit is high in fiber, which helps to stave off hunger. The soluble fiber or pectin in grapefruit is beneficial for lowering cholesterol. Grapefruits are believed to have originated in Jamaica. However, the United States is responsible for over 40 percent of the world's grapefruit cultivation.
