The basis of any sugar scrub is granulated sugar and oil. To make a basic sugar scrub, mix a large amount of granulated sugar with a smaller amount of coconut, olive or grapeseed oil. Essential oils and scents, such as lemon or peppermint, can then be added to the mixture.
Sugar scrubs are intended for use as facial and body exfoliants. The most important rule for making a good sugar scrub is to have more sugar than liquid, so that the sugar remains granular and does not dissolve.
Shaken Together's recipe for lemon mint sugar scrub instructs the user to mix 1 1/4 cups of sugar, 1/2 cup of coconut oil, 1 tablespoon of lemon juice, 5 drops each of peppermint and lemon essential oil and zest from half a lemon. This recipe makes roughly 12 ounces of scrub, or enough to fill three small mason jars.
A green tea sugar scrub can be made by mixing 1 cup of sugar with 1/8 of a cup olive or grapeseed oil and 1/8 of a cup cold brewed green tea. For a chocolate sugar scrub, mix 1 cup of brown sugar, 1/2 a cup of coconut oil, 1/3 of a cup almond oil, 2 tablespoons of cocoa powder and a few drops of coconut essential oil.
