Chee hau sauce, which is also known as brown bean sauce, can substitute for hoisin sauce. Because chee hau sauce has more chiles in it, a smaller quantity at of it may be appropriate. A mixture of Chinese five-spice powder and barbecue sauce can mimic the flavor of hoisin sauce.
For a more authentic substitute for hoisin sauce, take 1 cup of barbecue sauce and remove 3 tablespoons of sauce. Add 3 tablespoons of molasses, 4 teaspoons of soy sauce, 4 teaspoons of yeast extract, and 2 and 1/2 teaspoons of Chinese five-spice powder. Whisk the mixture to combine. This homemade substitution has a similarly sweet and spicy flavor to hoisin. Like hoisin, this sauce is suitable for grilling or marinating meat.
