Nana's Traditional Christmas Steamed Plum Pudding with Hard Sauce recipe earns a five-star rating on the Food Network's website. Combine 1 cup of light molasses, 3/4 cup of melted butter, 1/2 cup of warm milk and 2 beaten eggs in a bowl.
In another bowl, mix together 1 cup all-purpose flour, 1 teaspoon of baking soda, 1 teaspoon each of salt and ground cinnamon, and 1/2 teaspoon of ground cloves. Adding about one-third of the molasses mixture at a time, combine wet and dry ingredients.
Toss 1 pint of candied mixed fruit and 1 cup of raisins with a little flour. Add the fruit to the batter. Stir in 1 1/2 ounces of brandy. Pour the batter into a greased and sugared steam pudding mold. Put the mold on a rack in a pot. Add water until it comes halfway up the mold.
Cover the pot, and steam the pudding for about two hours. Keep an eye on the pot, and replace water, if necessary. Let the mold cool for five minutes, and then remove it from the pot. Dust the pudding with powdered sugar.
For a hard sauce topping, combine 1/4 pound of butter, 1 cup of sugar, 1 pinch of salt, 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract and 1 ounce of brandy or rum. Beat the ingredients until thoroughly combined. Serve the sauce over the pudding.
