A recipe for making ham and cabbage in a slow cooker consists of combining ham, cabbage, spices and broth with potatoes and carrots in a slow cooker. This is cooked on low for eight hours or on high for four hours or until the vegetables are tender.
Cut a head of cabbage in half and remove the core. Shred or chop the cabbage and add to the slow cooker. Add 1 pound of baby carrots to the slow cooker along with 1 chopped medium onion and 1 cup of chopped celery. Wash and peel 5 potatoes and cut them into chunks and add to the slow cooker. Cut cooked ham into 1-inch chunks and add 3 cups of ham to the slow cooker.
Add 1/2 teaspoon of black pepper, 1/2 teaspoon of minced garlic, 1/2 teaspoon of celery seed and 1 teaspoon of salt to the slow cooker. Cover the contents of the slow cooker with two 14-ounce cans of chicken stock or broth and add one bay leaf. Cover and cook on high for four hours or low for eight hours, until the carrots and potatoes are tender. Remove the bay leaf before serving.
This recipe is traditionally served with cornbread muffins or fried cornbread.
