Old Bay’s steamed shrimp with cocktail sauce and Whole Foods’ sweet, spicy and simple steamed shrimp are two good recipes. The first uses a classic seafood spice mix, while the second uses a combination of individual spices.
To make Old Bay’s steamed shrimp recipe, mix 1/2 cup of water, 1/2 cup of cider vinegar and 2 tablespoons of Old Bay seasoning in a saucepan, and bring to a boil. Stir in 1 pound of peeled and deveined shrimp with tails intact, cover, and steam for two to three minutes. Serve with cocktail sauce.
To prepare Whole Foods’ steamed shrimp, mix 1 tablespoon of chili powder, 1 tablespoon paprika, 3/4 teaspoon of cayenne pepper and 1 teaspoon of ground bay leaf. Add 1/2 teaspoon of dry mustard, 1 teaspoon of dried oregano, 1/2 teaspoon of salt and black pepper, 1 teaspoon of sugar and 1/2 teaspoon of ground coriander, mixing all together. Place a steamer in the pot, fill with water to just below the steamer, cover, and bring to a boil. Steam 2 pounds of spice-covered, medium shell-on shrimp for five minutes. Serve with lemon and lime wedges.
