One good recipe for slumgullion calls for 16 ounces of elbow macaroni, a pound of lean ground beef, one chopped, large onion and two cups of tomato sauce. It also requires 2 cans of mushrooms, 2 teaspoons of minced garlic, a can of minced tomatoes and salt and pepper to taste.
First, bring a large pot of water to boil, mixing in a little salt. Add the pasta, and let it cook for eight to 10 minutes or until it becomes al dente. Drain the macaroni, and put it into a large saucepan, then begin to brown the beef in a large skillet over medium heat. Right before the beef is finished, stir in the chopped onion.
Next, add the beef mixture to the saucepan with the pasta. Drain the two 4.5 ounce cans of mushrooms, then stir them into the pasta as well with the tomato sauce and garlic. Add salt and pepper to taste, then let the dish cook on low heat for another 10 to 15 minutes or until it is heated through. Overall, the dish should take approximately 40 minutes to cook from start to finish.
Some reviewers of the dish suggested slight modifications. One person added a cup and a half of mozzarella and a teaspoon of basil to the dish. Another dashed in a little garlic powder while cooking the beef and topped the dish with parmesan.
