Make a delicious meal with 4 hot Italian-style pork sausages, cut into 1/2-inch slices, and 1 pound of penne pasta. Garlic bread sprinkled with cheese and Italian seasonings makes a good side dish for this recipe.
Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil to cook the pasta. Cook it according to the package directions or to desired preference. Take a large skillet with 2 tablespoons of olive oil, and set it over high heat. Allow the oil to heat for a minute, then add 1/2 of a diced, medium-sized onion, 1 tablespoon of chopped garlic and 1 tablespoon of Italian seasoning. Use 1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes for extra spice.
Stir the mixture over the heat for about three minutes until the onion is tender. Add the Italian sausage, and allow it to cook for a minute. Stir in a 28-ounce can of diced or crushed tomatoes, and season with kosher salt and ground black pepper. Let the mixture simmer for 10 minutes, then blend in 1/4 cup of heavy cream, and stir well. Drain the pasta, and add it directly to the skillet, mixing it thoroughly with the sauce and the sausage. Transfer the pasta, sausage and sauce to a platter to serve, using basil leaves or a garnish of your choice.
To make the garlic bread, place 1/2 of a store-bought garlic bread loaf on a baking sheet covered in aluminum foil. Sprinkle with 1 cup of mozzarella cheese and 1/2 teaspoon of Italian seasoning, and place it in a preheated oven set to 400 F. Bake for 10 to 12 minutes or until the cheese is melted and the bread is warm throughout.
