The traditional Old-Fashioned is also commonly prepared with Bourbon instead of rye whiskey. There are also many Old-Fashioned variations. For example, to make a maple Old-Fashioned cocktail, pour 1 ounce maple syrup into a rocks glass with several dashes of Angostura bitters, 2 lemon and 2 orange wedges. Squeeze the juice from one of the orange and one of the lemon wedges over the ingredients in the glass. Muddle the ingredients together, then stir in 2 ounces of bourbon and fill with large ice cubes. Add a splash of soda water, stir again and garnish with a maraschino cherry.
To make a batch of Winter Spiced Old-Fashioned, prepare a spiced simple syrup by adding 1 cup sugar, 1 cup water, 3 cardamom pods, 1 cinnamon stick and 1 star anise to a saucepan over medium heat. Bring to a boil, then remove heat and let it sit, covered for 30 minutes. Strain the spices out with a fine mesh strainer and chill the simple syrup. Add the chilled syrup, 12 ounces of bourbon and ice to a cocktail shaker and shake vigorously. Pour the mixture over ice in four cocktail glasses. Garnish each glass with an orange wedge and maraschino cherries.Learn more about Liquor & Cocktails
