A good recipe for Nutella frosting is Creamy Nutella Frosting made with heavy cream, butter, Nutella, confectioners' sugar and vanilla extract. Another good recipe is Nutella Buttercream Frosting that only calls for butter, Nutella, powdered sugar and vanilla extract.
To make Creamy Nutella Frosting, cream 1 cup of unsalted softened butter until it turns light in color with a fluffy texture, and then mix in 2 cups of powdered sugar. Beat in 3/4 cup of Nutella, 3 to 4 tablespoons of heavy cream and 2 teaspoons of vanilla extract one ingredient at a time, adding more cream or powdered sugar for the right consistency. Mix in salt to taste. Use the frosting once the cupcakes or cake cools thoroughly.
Make Nutella Buttercream Frosting by beating 1 pound of softened unsalted butter and 13 ounces of Nutella in a bowl at medium-high speed for three minutes or until the texture turns light. Starting with 1/4 cup measurements, add 2 3/4 cups of powdered sugar, and then drizzle in 1 teaspoon of pure vanilla extract. Beat everything on medium for three minutes, and then mix the frosting on low for one minute until there are no remaining air bubbles. The frosting, topped with cocoa nibs and blueberries, works well spread on chocolate blueberry cupcakes.
