To make Kraft's Nanaimo bars, preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Microwave 2-ounces baker's semi-sweet chocolate and 1/2 cup butter for two minutes. Stir until well-combined. Blend in 1 egg and 1 teaspoon vanilla then stir in 2 cups graham cracker crumbs, 1 cup flaked coconut and 1/2 cup chopped walnuts. Press into the bottom of a 9-inch square pan and bake for eight minutes. Let it cool.
In a bowl, mix 2 tablespoons custard powder and 3 tablespoons milk. Add 1/4 cup butter and mix. Slowly beat in 2 cups icing sugar until blended and spread onto the crust and refrigerate for 15 minutes. Microwave 4-ounces chocolate and 1 tablespoon butter for two to three minutes stirring until well-combined. Spread over the custard layer and refrigerate until chilled. Cut into bars.
For mocha Nanaimo bars, blend 3 tablespoons coffee-flavored liqueur with 2 teaspoon instant coffee. Substitute this instead of the 3 tablespoons milk for the custard layer.
For multicolored Nanaimo bars, add 1/2 teaspoon peppermint extract and a few drops of green or red food coloring to the custard layer.Learn more about Desserts
