A good recipe for making butter pound cake from scratch is available on the Fine Cooking website, requiring butter, cake flour, granulated sugar, eggs and milk. Another good recipe is buttery pound cake that uses sour cream in addition to the other basic ingredients.
To make a good butter pound cake, cream together 1 1/4 cups of softened unsalted butter with 1 3/4 cups of granulated sugar until light in color and fluffy. Add in 2 egg yolks at room temperature and 3 whole eggs at room temperature. In a separate bowl, combine 2 1/2 cups of cake flour with 1 1/2 teaspoons of baking soda and 1/2 teaspoon of salt. Slowly add half of the flour mixture to the butter mixture, then beat in 2/3 cup of whole milk. Add the rest of the flour and 1 1/2 teaspoon of vanilla extract.
Pour the batter into a Bundt pan greased with butter and sprinkled with flour. Bake the cake at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for 45 to 55 minutes. Cool the cake for 10 minutes, and turn it upside down until completely cooled. For an extra moist cake, add 1/4 cup of sour cream to the batter along with the milk and vanilla.
